Many dream of retiring in a stunning tropical paradise where the cost of living is affordable, and the quality of life is exceptional. Bali is an enchanting destination where this dream can come true. However, as with any major life decision, it’s crucial to understand the requirements and consider the potential financial implications of relocating to another country.

While Bali offers many advantages for retirees, it's essential to be fully aware of all requirements and fiscal implications before moving. Indonesia has recently updated its visa codes and application processes. Both online and offline. These changes have streamlined the process, making it easier for retirees. Here is a breakdown of what you need to plan for a smooth transition into your Bali retirement.

What is a Retirement Visa?

Many retirees go for a retirement visa, known as a retirement KITAS (Limited Stay Permit). This visa lasts for one year and lets you leave and re-enter the country as much as you want. You can renew it every year for up to five years.

Retirement Visa Option in Bali

A. The E33F Retirement KITAS

If you're planning to retire in Bali, the E33F Retirement KITAS commonly called the Retirement Visa is one of the best options for retirees aged 60 years and older. This visa allows you to live in Bali or anywhere in Indonesia, offering flexibility and ease of renewal. Here is everything you need to know about the E33F Retirement KITAS:

Key Features:

  • Duration: Valid for one year and can be renewed annually for up to five years.

  • Sponsored Visa: You'll need a local sponsor, typically a government-approved visa agent or travel agency.

  • Multiple Entries: You can travel in and out of Indonesia as often as you like without needing a new visa each time.

Requirements:

  • Age: Applicants must be at least 60 years old.

  • Sponsor: A local Indonesian sponsor, usually a visa agent, is required.

  • Financial Proof: You’ll need to show a minimum monthly income of USD 1,500 from pensions, savings, or investments.

  • Accommodation: Provide proof of a rental agreement in Indonesia. The rental cost must be at least USD 500 per month in areas like Bali or USD 300 in other regions.

  • Health Insurance: You must have health insurance that covers your stay in Indonesia.

  • Local Employment: You’re required to employ at least one local worker, such as a housekeeper, gardener, or driver.

  • Non-Working Visa: While you cannot work with this visa, you’re free to volunteer or invest in local businesses without being involved in daily operations.

Application Process:

  1. Choose a Visa Agent: Select a government-approved visa agent to act as your sponsor and help with the application.

  2. Submit Documents: Provide required documents, such as proof of income, rental agreement, health insurance, and personal details.

  3. Visa Approval: Once approved, you’ll receive a VITAS (Temporary Stay Visa) to enter Indonesia.

  4. Convert to KITAS: Upon arrival, your visa agent will help convert your VITAS into a Retirement KITAS (E33F), giving you one year of residency.

Renewal and Long-Term Options:

  • The Retirement KITAS can be renewed yearly for up to five years.

  • After five years, you can apply for a KITAP (Permanent Stay Permit), which offers more stability and long-term benefits for living in Indonesia.

B. Golden Visa -Silver Hair Visa (5 Years)

The Golden Visa is also called the Silver Hair Visa (E33E). It is a long-term visa designed for retirees and high-net-worth individuals who want to settle in Indonesia. This visa provides a hassle-free option for living in Indonesia for up to five years, offering greater flexibility, compared to the yearly renewal required for the Retirement KITAS.

Key Features

  • Duration: Valid for five years without the need for annual renewals.

  • Visa Type: Long-term residency visa, perfect for retirees seeking stability and extended stays.

  • Multiple Entries: Enjoy unlimited travel in and out of Indonesia during the visa period.

Benefits of the Silver Hair Visa

  • Long-Term Stay: Offers five years of residency without the need for yearly paperwork, unlike the KITAS.

  • Convenience: Ideal for retirees looking for a permanent base in Indonesia with fewer administrative hurdles.

  • Path to Permanent Residency: After holding this visa for five years, you can apply for a KITAP (Permanent Stay Permit), providing greater security and stability.

Eligibility and Requirements

  • Age: Applicants must be at least 60  years old.

  • Financial Proof:

    • Minimum monthly income of USD 3,000 (from pensions, savings, or investments).

    • Bank account statements show a balance of at least USD 200,000.

  • Health Insurance: Comprehensive health insurance covering your stay in Indonesia.

  • Accommodation: Proof of property ownership or rental in Indonesia, typically with higher standards than required for the KITAS.

  • Sponsor: A local sponsor, often a government-approved visa agent, is required.

  • Visa Fee: IDR 13,000,000 (around USD 830), with additional costs if using an agent.

What You Can Do with This Visa

  • Long-Term Residency: Stay in Indonesia for five years without needing yearly renewals.

  • Family Residency: Eligible family members can live with you in Indonesia under this visa.

  • Travel Freedom: Unlimited entry and exit from Indonesia without applying for new visas.

  • Retirement Lifestyle: Enjoy leisure, tourism, and a peaceful retirement without restrictions from short-term visas.

Restrictions

  • Non-Working Visa: You cannot work for wages or compensation in Indonesia. However, you may invest in or own businesses without being actively involved in daily management.

  • Business Activities: Passive ownership of investments or businesses is allowed, which makes villa management in Bali especially relevant for owners who prefer a hands-off approach.

Application Process:

  1. Choose a Visa Agent: Work with an authorized visa agent who will act as your sponsor and help you with the application.

  2. Submit Documents: Provide proof of income, health insurance, accommodation, and personal identification.

  3. Visa Approval: Once approved, you will receive the E33E Silver Hair Visa, granting five years of residency.

Renewal and Long-Term Options

After five years, you can either renew the Silver Hair Visa or apply for a KITAP (Permanent Stay Permit) to secure long-term residency in Indonesia. Dreaming of a worry-free retirement in Bali?
